DEVCON was formed in 1999 as a non-governmental organization for the purpose of contributing to rural development through sustainable natural resource management and improving livelihoods.
We promote ‘the wellbeing of the man and the health of the environment”. Our work has helped forest-dependent communities in Edondon, Oban and Afi forest areas of Cross River State to develop and implement land use and forest management plans with by-laws, carry out regeneration of deforested areas, initiate sustainable livelihoods with improved links to markets, enable community forest monitoring and surveillance, established networks of community based organizations and links to protected area institutions particularly the Cross River National Park and Cross River State Forestry Commission.
DEVCON is a member of a network of civil society organizations that influenced the passage of the new Cross River State Forestry Commission Law in 2010 (not the moratorium) that recognizes inclusive forest governance and equitable benefit sharing with strong participation of forest-dependent communities.
